What is it?
• Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare autoimmune neurological disorder
• The body’s immune system attacks peripheral nerves
• Leads to muscle weakness and paralysis
Nature of Disease
• Non-communicable
• Not infectious
• Can be life-threatening in severe cases due to respiratory muscle involvement
How Does it Occur?
• Often triggered after infections, not spread directly
Common Triggers
• Viral infections (e.g., flu, COVID-19)
• Bacterial infections (notably Campylobacter jejuni)
• Mechanism: Immune cross-reaction (molecular mimicry)
How Does it “Spread”?
• GBS does NOT spread person-to-person
