Overview

MAYDAY is the internationally recognised distress signal used in radio communication to indicate that a vessel, aircraft, or person is in grave and imminent danger and requires immediate assistance. It is primarily used in maritime and aviation communication systems to alert rescue authorities and nearby units about life-threatening emergencies.

The term is always spoken three times consecutively“Mayday, Mayday, Mayday” — to ensure that the distress signal is clearly understood over radio transmissions.

Origin of the Term

The word Mayday originates from the French phrase “m’aidez” (meaning “help me”) or “venez m’aider” (come help me).

It was introduced in 1923 by Frederick Stanley Mockford, a radio officer at Croydon Airport in London, to create a universally understood distress call for aviation communication. The term was later adopted internationally and became the standard distress signal in both aviation and maritime sectors.

When a MAYDAY Call is Used

A MAYDAY call is transmitted when there is immediate danger to life or the vessel/aircraft. Situations may include:

  • Ship sinking or flooding
  • Fire onboard a vessel or aircraft
  • Collision at sea or in air
  • Aircraft crash risk or critical mechanical failure
  • Severe medical emergencies at sea
  • Piracy or armed attack
  • Loss of control or navigation capability

Format of a MAYDAY Call

A typical MAYDAY message includes critical information to assist rescue operations. The format generally follows:

  1. Distress Signal: “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday”
  2. Identification: Name or call sign of the vessel or aircraft
  3. Position: Latitude and longitude or nearby landmark
  4. Nature of Distress: Description of the emergency
  5. Assistance Required: Type of help needed
  6. Additional Information: Number of people onboard or other relevant details

Difference from Other Radio Calls

Maritime and aviation communication uses three levels of urgency signals:

  • MAYDAY – Life-threatening emergency requiring immediate help
  • PAN-PAN – Urgent situation but not immediately life-threatening
  • SECURITE – Safety information such as navigation warnings or weather alerts

Role in Maritime Safety Systems

MAYDAY calls are part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and are monitored by coastal radio stations, rescue coordination centres, and nearby ships to ensure rapid emergency response.

Importance

  • Enables immediate alert to rescue authorities
  • Standardised global distress communication
  • Improves response time during emergencies
  • Saves lives through coordinated rescue operations

Conclusion

MAYDAY is a critical distress signal used worldwide in maritime and aviation communication. Its standardised format and universal recognition ensure that emergency situations are quickly identified and responded to, making it a cornerstone of global safety and rescue systems.
