Paniya Wildlife Sanctuary, also called Chanchai-Paniya Wildlife Sanctuary, is located in Amreli district of Gujarat. It is a small protected area of about 39.63 sq km and was notified in 1989.
It is important because it forms part of the Greater Gir landscape, which supports the dispersal of the Asiatic lion beyond Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary.
Location and Habitat
Paniya lies in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, close to the Gir forest system.
Its habitat is mainly:
- dry deciduous forest
- scrubland
- grass patches
- rocky and undulating terrain
- arid landscape with limited water availability
Because of its dry and open habitat, the sanctuary is also suitable for species such as chinkara, apart from supporting lion movement.
Importance for Asiatic Lions
Paniya is significant because it functions as a satellite habitat of Gir.
Its importance increased because Asiatic lions are no longer restricted to the core Gir area. They are now found across several parts of Saurashtra, including satellite habitats such as:
- Paniya
- Mitiyala
- Girnar
- coastal areas
- revenue and reserve forest patches around Gir
The sanctuary helps in:
- dispersal of lions outside Gir
- reducing pressure on the core Gir habitat
- supporting movement between lion-use areas
- maintaining additional space for the expanding lion population
Its value is not because of its size, but because of its location within the larger lion distribution zone of Gujarat.
Key Concerns
Paniya faces problems because it is a small sanctuary within a human-dominated landscape.
Major concerns include:
- very small protected area
- limited water availability
- pressure from surrounding villages
- grazing pressure
- road and settlement-related disturbance
- dependence on connectivity with Gir
- risk of human-lion conflict
- vulnerability of lions due to concentration in one broad region of Gujarat
The larger issue is that even though lions have expanded outside Gir, they are still concentrated within Gujarat. This creates risk from:
- disease outbreak
- natural disaster
- genetic limitation
- conflict-related deaths
- habitat fragmentation
Conclusion
Paniya Wildlife Sanctuary is a small but strategically important protected area in Gujarat.
Its main importance lies in its role as a satellite habitat in the Asiatic lion landscape. It supports lion dispersal outside Gir and forms part of the wider conservation network needed for the expanding lion population in Saurashtra.
