Maitri Setu

Maitri Setu is a bridge between India and Bangladesh built over the Feni River. It connects Sabroom in South Tripura, India with Ramgarh in Bangladesh.

The name “Maitri Setu” means Friendship Bridge, reflecting India-Bangladesh connectivity and regional cooperation.

Location and Basic Facts

Maitri Setu is located in the North-East region of India, specifically in Tripura.

Important facts:

  • River: Feni River
  • Indian side: Sabroom, South Tripura
  • Bangladesh side: Ramgarh
  • Length: about 1.9 km
  • Inaugurated: March 2021
  • Implemented by: National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited
  • Purpose: road connectivity, trade, movement of goods and people

The bridge gives Tripura direct connectivity with Bangladesh and reduces the region’s dependence on long land routes through the Siliguri Corridor.

Importance for North-East India

Maitri Setu is strategically important because it gives the North-East a shorter route to the sea.

Sabroom in Tripura is located close to Bangladesh’s Chittagong Port. After the bridge, Tripura and nearby North-Eastern states can access Bangladesh’s port infrastructure more easily.

Its importance includes:

  • improving connectivity between Tripura and Bangladesh
  • reducing transport distance for North-East India
  • supporting trade through Chittagong Port
  • strengthening India’s Act East Policy
  • improving border infrastructure
  • creating new economic opportunities in South Tripura
  • helping develop Sabroom as a trade and logistics hub

The bridge is often seen as a major step in converting Tripura from a landlocked state into a gateway for regional trade.

Feni River and Border Significance

The Feni River flows along parts of the India-Bangladesh border.

It originates in the hills of Tripura and flows into Bangladesh before draining into the Bay of Bengal.

The river is important because:

  • it forms part of the India-Bangladesh border landscape
  • it supports local agriculture and settlements
  • it is linked with cross-border water issues
  • it provides the physical base for Maitri Setu

The Feni River is also part of India-Bangladesh water cooperation discussions. India and Bangladesh have discussed sharing of Feni waters, especially for drinking water supply in Tripura.

Strategic and Economic Significance

Maitri Setu is more than a local bridge. It has regional and strategic importance.

Its significance includes:

  • strengthening India-Bangladesh relations
  • improving access of the North-East to Bangladesh ports
  • supporting cross-border trade
  • reducing logistics cost
  • helping regional economic integration
  • supporting BIMSTEC and Act East connectivity goals
  • improving border-area development
  • increasing people-to-people contact

For India, the bridge supports the larger goal of integrating the North-East with neighbouring countries and Southeast Asia.

For Bangladesh, it strengthens trade links with India’s North-East and can support economic activity in border regions such as Ramgarh.

Conclusion

Maitri Setu is an important India-Bangladesh connectivity project over the Feni River.

It connects Sabroom in Tripura with Ramgarh in Bangladesh and gives India’s North-East a shorter route towards Chittagong Port.

Its importance lies in regional connectivity, border infrastructure, trade facilitation, India’s Act East Policy and deeper India-Bangladesh cooperation.
