GE F414 Engine

Introduction

The GE F414 Engine is an advanced afterburning turbofan engine developed by GE Aerospace, United States, for modern fighter aircraft. It belongs to the 98-kilonewton or 22,000-pound thrust class and offers greater thrust, durability and operational flexibility than the earlier GE F404 engine.

India has selected the F414-GE-INS6 variant to power the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft Tejas Mk2

India–U.S. Cooperation

In June 2023, GE Aerospace and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the potential production of F414 engines in India.

The proposed cooperation involves:

  • Joint production of the F414-GE-INS6 engine in India.
  • Transfer of manufacturing capabilities and technical know-how.
  • Development of a domestic ecosystem for engine components.
  • Maintenance, repair and overhaul capabilities in India.
  • Participation of Indian public and private-sector companies in the supply chain.

The arrangement remains linked to the required commercial agreements, technology-transfer arrangements and regulatory approvals. GE Aerospace stated in 2025 that it had received U.S. government approval and was working with HAL towards joint production. 

Role in Tejas Mk2

The F414 engine will power the Tejas Mk2, a larger and more capable development of the existing Tejas fighter.

Compared with Tejas Mk1 and Mk1A, which use the F404-IN20 engine, the F414 will provide the Tejas Mk2 with:

  • Higher thrust.
  • Greater payload-carrying capacity.
  • Increased fuel capacity and combat range.
  • Improved acceleration and manoeuvrability.
  • Ability to carry heavier weapons and advanced sensors.
  • Better performance during high-altitude and demanding combat operations.

India had earlier selected 99 F414 engines for the Tejas Mk2 programme. 

Global Applications

Different variants of the F414 engine power or have been selected for aircraft such as:

  • F/A-18E/F Super Hornet
  • EA-18G Growler
  • Saab JAS 39E/F Gripen
  • South Korea’s KF-21 Boramae
  • NASA’s X-59 experimental aircraft
  • India’s proposed Tejas Mk2

The engine has therefore developed a substantial global operational and technological base. 

Significance for India

Fighter Aircraft Modernisation

The engine is essential for the timely development and induction of the Tejas Mk2, which is expected to replace ageing aircraft in the Indian Air Force.

Defence Indigenisation

Domestic production can increase Indian participation in the manufacture, assembly, testing and maintenance of advanced fighter engines.

Technology Capability

The project may help India acquire experience in critical areas such as:

  • Advanced materials.
  • Turbine manufacturing.
  • Digital engine controls.
  • Precision engineering.
  • Thermal management.
  • Aerospace quality assurance.

Reduced Import Dependence

Local production and maintenance would reduce dependence on fully imported engines and improve long-term fleet availability.

Strategic Partnership

The project is a major element of India–U.S. defence-industrial cooperation and complements frameworks such as iCET, INDUS-X and the Defence Industrial Cooperation Roadmap.

Challenges

  • Finalisation of technology-transfer and commercial arrangements.
  • U.S. export-control requirements.
  • Absorption of complex manufacturing technology by Indian industry.
  • Dependence on foreign intellectual property and certain critical components.
  • Synchronising engine production with the Tejas Mk2 development timeline.
  • India still requires an indigenous capability to design complete fighter engines independently.

Conclusion

The GE F414 engine is central to India’s Tejas Mk2 programme and represents one of the most important proposed India–U.S. defence technology collaborations. Domestic production can strengthen India’s aerospace manufacturing and maintenance capabilities, but achieving genuine self-reliance will ultimately require indigenous expertise in the complete design and development of advanced fighter aircraft engines.
