Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC)

Introduction

Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) is a class of specialised warships designed for the detection, tracking and neutralisation of enemy submarines operating in shallow coastal waters. These vessels form an important component of the Indian Navy’s coastal defence architecture by protecting ports, harbours, naval bases and critical offshore infrastructure.

The Arnala-class is the Indian Navy’s latest ASW-SWC.

Need for ASW-SWC

  • Conventional destroyers and frigates are optimised for deep-sea operations and are less effective in shallow waters.
  • Shallow coastal regions create complex acoustic conditions, making submarine detection difficult.
  • Growing submarine deployments in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) necessitate dedicated shallow-water anti-submarine platforms.
