The White-bellied Heron is one of the world’s rarest herons and is associated with the river systems of the eastern Himalayas.

Distribution and Habitat
The species has a highly restricted distribution in the eastern Himalayan region. Its remaining populations occur mainly in:
- Bhutan
- north-eastern India
- northern Myanmar
It has disappeared from much of its former range, including Nepal, and may also be locally extinct in Bangladesh.
In India, it is recorded mainly in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Important locations include the Namdapha landscape and river systems connected with the eastern Himalayan foothills.
The bird prefers:
- undisturbed rivers with clear and fast-flowing water;
- shallow channels, pools and river islands;
- subtropical and tropical broad-leaved forests;
- tall riverbank trees used for nesting and roosting;
- areas with low human disturbance.
Its dependence on both healthy rivers and adjoining forests makes it particularly vulnerable to changes in riverine ecosystems.
Behaviour and Ecology
The White-bellied Heron feeds mainly on fish. It usually stands on rocks, riverbanks or shallow sections of a river and captures prey using its long, pointed bill.
It may also feed on:
- amphibians;
- crustaceans;
- aquatic insects;
- other small aquatic organisms.
The species generally forages alone and requires relatively undisturbed stretches of river. It nests on large trees close to rivers, generally during the spring and early summer.
Because it occupies the upper levels of the aquatic food chain and depends on clean, naturally flowing rivers, its presence indicates the ecological health of riverine habitats.
Threats and Conservation
The principal threats include:
- construction of dams and hydropower projects;
- modification of natural river flow;
- sand and gravel mining;

Hydropower development can alter water depth, flow speed, sediment movement and fish availability. Removal of tall riverbank trees also reduces suitable nesting and roosting sites.

Bhutan supports one of the largest remaining populations and recorded 29 individuals during its 2025 national survey. The global population is believed to remain below 60 individuals.
