Electronic waste, or E-Waste Management, refers to discarded electrical and electronic equipment, including components, consumables, spare parts and accessories that are no longer useful to their owner.
Common examples include:
- computers and mobile phones;
- televisions and refrigerators;
- air conditioners and washing machines;
- printers and communication equipment;
- medical and laboratory devices;
- electronic tools and consumer appliances;
- solar photovoltaic modules and panels.
Rapid technological change, declining product life, frequent upgrades and rising consumption have made e-waste one of the fastest-growing waste streams.
Environmental and Health Effects
Electronic equipment contains valuable materials such as copper, aluminium, gold, silver, cobalt and rare metals. It may also contain hazardous substances, including:

- cadmium;
- chromium;
- brominated flame retardants;
- toxic plastics and chemicals.
Unsafe recycling practices such as open burning, acid leaching and manual dismantling can contaminate air, water and soil.

Legal Framework in India
E-waste is regulated under the Environment Protection Act, 1986 and the E-Waste Management Rules, 2022.

- recyclers.
These entities must register on the centralised online portal operated by the Central Pollution Control Board.
The rules introduced an Extended Producer Responsibility framework. Producers must ensure that a prescribed quantity of electronic waste arising from their products is recycled through registered recyclers.
Recyclers generate EPR certificates according to the quantity of waste processed. Producers purchase these certificates to fulfil their recycling obligations.
The Central Pollution Control Board coordinates implementation, while State Pollution Control Boards monitor compliance and recycling facilities within their jurisdictions.

Effective e-waste management follows a hierarchy:
Reduce and extend product life
Durable design, repair, upgrading and refurbishment can delay the generation of waste.
Collection and segregation
Discarded electronics should be collected separately from municipal solid waste through authorised centres, producers or take-back systems.
Refurbishment and reuse
Functional products and components may be repaired and returned to use, reducing demand for new equipment.
Dismantling and recycling
Registered facilities separate plastics, metals, circuit boards, glass and hazardous components. Valuable materials are recovered through controlled mechanical, chemical and metallurgical processes.
Safe disposal
Materials that cannot be recovered must be treated and disposed of in authorised hazardous-waste facilities.
Challenges and Way Forward
India’s e-waste sector faces several problems:
- dominance of informal collection and recycling;
- low consumer awareness;
- weak collection networks;
- mixing of e-waste with ordinary waste;
- unsafe recovery of valuable metals;
- inadequate monitoring of recycling claims;
- illegal import and misclassification of electronic waste;
- poor working conditions in informal units.
A stronger system requires:
