Meaning and Working

Floating Solar Photovoltaic, or floating solar, refers to solar photovoltaic panels installed on floating structures over water bodies instead of on land.

These systems are commonly installed on:

  • reservoirs;
  • dams;
  • lakes;
  • irrigation ponds;
  • water-treatment reservoirs;
  • abandoned mining pits.

The solar panels are mounted on buoyant platforms that are anchored to the shore or reservoir bed. Electricity generated by the panels is transmitted through cables to an inverter and then supplied to the power grid.

Advantages

Floating solar offers several advantages over land-based solar projects.

Land conservation

It reduces the need to acquire large areas of agricultural or forest land.

Higher efficiency

Water helps cool the panels, which may improve their operating efficiency compared with panels exposed to high land temperatures.

  • Omkareshwar reservoir in Madhya Pradesh;
  • several NTPC and state utility reservoirs.

Floating solar can help India expand renewable energy capacity without intensifying competition for land.

Challenges and Environmental Concerns

Floating solar projects face several technical and ecological challenges.

Major concerns include:

  • higher initial cost than conventional ground-mounted solar;
  • corrosion caused by constant exposure to water and humidity;
  • difficulty in maintenance and repair;
  • impact of strong winds, waves and changing water levels;
  • need for specialised anchoring systems;
  • possible effects on aquatic ecosystems;
  • interference with fishing and navigation;
  • reduced sunlight penetration into water.

Large-scale coverage of a reservoir may affect:

  • water temperature;
  • dissolved oxygen;
  • aquatic plants;
  • fish and plankton;
  • local livelihoods.

Environmental impact therefore depends on the proportion of the water body covered and the ecological characteristics of the reservoir.

Future Potential

Floating solar can become an important component of India’s renewable-energy transition, particularly where land is scarce or expensive.

Its expansion requires:

  • careful site selection;
  • limits on the percentage of reservoir surface covered;
  • environmental-impact assessment;
  • durable and recyclable floating structures;
  • improved anchoring and storm-resistance systems;
  • integration with hydropower and battery storage;
  • protection of fishing and community rights.

Floating solar should complement rather than replace land-based solar, rooftop solar and other renewable-energy systems.
