Meaning and Methodology
The Henley Passport Index is a global ranking of passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without obtaining a visa in advance.
It is published by Henley & Partners and is based primarily on data from the International Air Transport Association.
The index compares:
- 199 passports;
- 227 travel destinations.
A passport receives a score of 1 for each destination accessible through:
- visa-free entry;
- visa on arrival;
- visitor permit;
- electronic travel authorisation that does not require prior government approval.
A destination requiring a conventional visa or government-approved e-visa before departure receives a score of 0.
Ranking System
The total score of a passport equals the number of destinations accessible without a prior visa.
For example, if a passport allows access to 150 destinations without obtaining a visa beforehand, its mobility score is 150.
Passports with the same score receive the same rank.
The index assumes that the traveller:
- holds a normal valid passport;
- is travelling for a short stay;
- meets ordinary entry requirements;
- is travelling for tourism or business;
- does not require special diplomatic or official privileges.
The rankings are updated periodically because visa policies frequently change.
India’s Position
India’s ranking has fluctuated during 2026 because the index is updated as countries change their visa policies.
In the July 2026 update, India was ranked 81st, with access to 55 destinations without requiring a prior visa.
Earlier during 2026, India had ranked as high as 75th. This shows that changes in rank do not necessarily reflect a major change in India’s diplomatic position; they may also result from changes in the mobility scores of other countries.
India’s passport strength is influenced by factors such as:

Importance and Limitations

Countries may liberalise visa requirements to encourage:
