Blue Mormon

Basic Profile

The Blue Mormon is a large swallowtail butterfly found mainly in the Indian subcontinent.

  • Scientific name: Papilio polymnestor
  • Family: Papilionidae
  • Order: Lepidoptera
  • Common name: Blue Mormon

It is especially associated with the Western Ghats and peninsular India and is one of the most striking large butterflies found in the region.

Physical Characteristics

The Blue Mormon is a large, dark-coloured butterfly with prominent blue markings on its wings.

Its major features include:

  • broad black wings;
  • bright blue patches on the hindwings;
  • strong and rapid flight;
  • large body size typical of swallowtail butterflies.

Unlike many other swallowtails, the Blue Mormon does not possess long tail-like extensions on its hindwings.

Males and females are broadly similar in appearance, though minor differences may occur in size and markings.

Habitat and Distribution

The species is commonly found in:

  • evergreen and semi-evergreen forests;
  • moist deciduous forests;
  • plantations;
  • gardens;
  • forest edges;
  • areas with abundant citrus plants.

Its distribution includes parts of:

  • Maharashtra;
  • Goa;
  • Karnataka;
  • Kerala;
  • Tamil Nadu;
  • other parts of peninsular India;
  • Sri Lanka.

It is strongly associated with humid and forested landscapes.

Ecology and Importance

The larvae feed mainly on plants belonging to the Rutaceae family, particularly citrus and related species.

Adult butterflies feed on nectar from flowers and contribute to pollination.

The Blue Mormon is also useful as a bio-indicator because changes in butterfly populations can reflect:

  • habitat degradation;
  • pesticide use;
  • loss of host plants;
  • changes in rainfall and temperature;
  • fragmentation of forests.

It occupies an important position in food webs as prey for birds, reptiles and other predators.

The Blue Mormon has also been designated the State Butterfly of Maharashtra.

Conservation

The species is not considered among the most severely threatened Indian butterflies, but its populations can still be affected by:

  • destruction of forest habitats;
  • excessive pesticide use;
  • urbanisation;
  • removal of larval host plants;
  • climate-related ecological changes.

Conservation measures include:

  • protection of Western Ghats habitats;
  • preservation of native flowering plants;
  • maintenance of citrus and other host plants;
  • reduced indiscriminate pesticide use;
  • creation of butterfly-friendly gardens and ecological corridors.

Conclusion

The Blue Mormon is a prominent swallowtail butterfly of peninsular India, particularly associated with the Western Ghats. Its ecological role as a pollinator and bio-indicator, together with its recognition as Maharashtra’s State Butterfly, makes it important for both biodiversity conservation and environmental monitoring.
