Location and Ecological Features
The Pichavaram Mangroves are located in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, on the Coromandel Coast, between the Vellar estuary in the north and the Coleroon (Kollidam) estuary in the south.
The ecosystem covers about 1,478.64 hectares and comprises a complex network of mangrove forests, tidal creeks, backwaters, mudflats and channels connected to the Bay of Bengal.
- It is influenced by both freshwater inflows and tidal seawater, creating a brackish-water ecosystem.
- Important mangrove species include Avicennia and Rhizophora.
- The mangrove-creek system provides important breeding and nursery habitats for fish, prawns, crabs and other estuarine organisms.
- It also supports numerous resident and migratory waterbirds.
Ecological and Socio-Economic Significance
Pichavaram provides several important ecosystem services:
- acts as a natural bio-shield against cyclones, storm surges and coastal flooding;
- stabilises shorelines and reduces coastal erosion;
- supports coastal fisheries and local livelihoods;
- traps sediments and nutrients and improves coastal ecosystem productivity;
- provides habitat and nursery grounds for aquatic biodiversity;
- stores significant quantities of blue carbon, contributing to climate-change mitigation.
Mangrove vegetation also dissipates wave energy, making restoration and conservation of such ecosystems an important component of nature-based coastal disaster-risk reduction.
Ramsar Status and Conservation
Pichavaram Mangrove was designated a Ramsar Site in 2022 and has Ramsar Site No. 2482, recognising its international importance as a wetland ecosystem.
Major pressures include:
- alteration of freshwater inflows and salinity;
- aquaculture and other land-use changes;
- pollution and waste disposal;
- unsustainable extraction of biological resources;
- tourism pressure;
- sea-level rise and increasing coastal hazards.
Conservation of Pichavaram therefore has significance beyond biodiversity protection. It integrates wetland conservation, blue-carbon sequestration, coastal livelihood security and climate-resilient disaster management.
