The UPSC age limit for 2027 is 21–32 years for General/EWS, 35 for OBC and 37 for SC/ST candidates. The age cut-off date is 1 August 2027, based on existing UPSC rules.
If you’re worried that you’ve started preparing too late, or that your next attempt might be your last, we understand. Sometimes, knowing how many chances you have left feels more stressful than the examination itself.

Let’s clear that confusion first.
UPSC Age Limit 2027: Category-Wise Eligibility
Your category determines your upper-age limit and maximum attempts.
| Category | Upper Age Limit | Attempts |
| General/EWS | 32 years | 6 |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 35 years | 9 |
| SC/ST | 37 years | Unlimited within age limit |
| General/EWS PwBD | 42 years | 9 |
| OBC PwBD | 45 years | 9 |
| SC/ST PwBD | 47 years | Unlimited within age limit |
Remember: Having attempts remaining doesn’t mean you’re eligible if you’ve crossed your age limit.
How to Calculate Your UPSC Age for 2027
UPSC calculates your age on 1 August, not on the examination day.
For General/EWS candidates, the expected eligible birth-date range is 2 August 1995 to 1 August 2006.
Consider two aspirants:
Aspirant A: Born on 2 August 1995. They turn 32 one day after the cut-off.
Eligible for CSE 2027.
Aspirant B: Born on 1 August 1995. They complete 32 years on the cut-off date.
Not eligible under General-category rules.
Just one day’s difference changes everything.
For OBC candidates, the expected earliest eligible birth date is 2 August 1992; for SC/ST, it is 2 August 1990.
Is the UPSC Age Limit Different for Women?
No. UPSC does not provide additional age relaxation simply for being female.
A General-category woman has the same 32-year limit and six attempts as a General-category man.
Women belonging to OBC, SC/ST or other eligible relaxation categories receive the benefits applicable to those categories.
Has UPSC Increased the General Age Limit to 35?
No. This is a rumour, not an official rule.
The General-category upper-age limit remains 32 years under the existing framework.
The 35-year limit applies to eligible OBC candidates.
Please don’t plan another year of preparation based on a forwarded message. Check the official notification.
What Counts as a UPSC Attempt?
An attempt counts only when you appear in at least one Prelims paper.
| Situation | Attempt Counted? |
| Applied but didn’t appear | No |
| Appeared in GS Paper I | Yes |
| Appeared only in CSAT | Yes |
| Appeared but didn’t qualify | Yes |
Suppose you’ve applied four times but appeared only twice. You’ve used two attempts, not four.
For eligible ex-servicemen and certain defence personnel, additional age relaxation may apply under the notification. Candidates must also satisfy UPSC‘s graduation, nationality and other eligibility requirements.
Starting UPSC Preparation at 28 or 30?
Maybe you’re working full-time. Maybe you’ve already attempted UPSC. Or perhaps you’re finally ready to pursue something you’ve wanted for years.
You’re not competing with someone else’s starting age. You’re working with the opportunities available to you.
If you have limited attempts remaining, prioritise PYQs, revision, CSAT and regular mock-test analysis. Don’t spend months collecting resources.
