Arnala Class

Introduction

The Arnala class is a class of Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) being inducted into the Indian Navy. Designed and built in India, these vessels are intended to detect, track and neutralise enemy submarines operating in coastal and shallow waters, thereby strengthening India’s coastal defence and maritime security.

Background

  • Developed under the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) Project.
  • Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, in partnership with Larsen & Toubro (L&T).
  • A total of 16 vessels are being constructed for the Indian Navy.
  • The class is named after INS Arnala, the lead ship, named after the historic Arnala Fort in Maharashtra.

Recent Developments

  • INS Arnala, the lead ship of the class, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 18 June 2025.
  • The remaining 15 ASW-SWC vessels are at various stages of construction and trials and will be inducted in phases.

Way Forward

  • Complete the induction of all 16 ASW-SWC vessels on schedule.
  • Integrate next-generation sonar, unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) and AI-enabled underwater surveillance systems.
  • Strengthen indigenous development of anti-submarine weapons and sensors.
  • Enhance coordination with maritime patrol aircraft and helicopters for layered anti-submarine defence.
