The Indian Army is raising dedicated Baaz Battalions to strengthen its Remotely Piloted Aircraft capability for surveillance, intelligence gathering and precision operations through a specialised drone force.

Baaz Battalions

Baaz Battalions are dedicated Remotely Piloted Aircraft battalions.

They are built on existing RPA Flights and integrate:

  • Drone operators
  • Technical staff
  • Mission planners

under a single command.

Functions

Baaz Battalions will support:

  • Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance
  • Real-time battlefield monitoring
  • Target acquisition
  • Artillery support
  • Battle Damage Assessment

Remotely Piloted Aircraft

RPA refers to aircraft operated remotely without an onboard pilot.

They are used for:

  • Surveillance
