What is Bio-PET
- Bio-PET is a bio-based variant of PET plastic
- Chemically identical to conventional PET, but partly derived from renewable biological sources
- Commonly used in bottles, food packaging, textiles, and consumer goods
Composition
- PET is made from two components
- Monoethylene Glycol (MEG)
- Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA)
- In Bio-PET
- MEG is produced from plant-based sources such as sugarcane, corn, or other biomass
- PTA is still largely derived from fossil fuels
- Most commercial Bio-PET is 30% bio-based (bio-MEG + fossil-based PTA)
Production Process
- Biomass (e.g. sugarcane) is fermented to produce bio-ethanol
- Bio-ethanol is converted into bio-MEG
- Bio-MEG is polymerised with PTA to form Bio-PET
- End product is indistinguishable from conventional PET in performance
Key Properties
- Same strength, transparency, and durability as PET
- Fully recyclable through existing PET recycling systems
- Non-biodegradable, despite being partly bio-based

- Beverage bottles and food containers

- Textile fibres (polyester)
