Origin and Course
The Congo River is the principal river of Central Africa and the second-largest river in the world by water discharge after the Amazon.
Its most distant headstream is the Chambeshi River, which originates in the highlands of north-eastern Zambia. The upper river system later becomes the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The river is known by different names along its course:
Chambeshi → Lualaba → Congo River → Atlantic Ocean
After flowing northwards, the Lualaba crosses the equator and becomes the Congo River near Kisangani, below the Boyoma Falls. The river then curves westward and south-westward before entering the Atlantic Ocean.
The Congo is the only major river in the world to cross the equator twice.
Basin and Tributaries
The Congo Basin covers more than four million square kilometres and extends across several Central African countries.
Important tributaries include:
- Ubangi;
- Sangha;
- Kasai;
- Lomami;
- Aruwimi;
- Ruki;
- Luvua.
The river receives rainfall from regions located on both sides of the equator. Since the rainy seasons differ between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, the river maintains a relatively regular flow throughout the year.
At Pool Malebo, the river widens between Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo. These are among the world’s closest national capital cities.
Physical Features
The river flows through three broad geographical sections.
Upper Congo
The upper course includes the Chambeshi and Lualaba systems. It contains lakes, wetlands, rapids and waterfalls.
Middle Congo
Between Kisangani and Pool Malebo, the river becomes broad and largely navigable. It passes through dense equatorial forests and receives several major tributaries.
Lower Congo
Below Pool Malebo, the river descends sharply through a series of rapids and waterfalls known as the Livingstone Falls. These obstruct continuous navigation between the interior and the Atlantic coast.
The lower Congo flows through a deep and narrow channel and is regarded as the world’s deepest known river in certain sections.
Economic and Ecological Importance
The Congo River is a major transport route because road and railway networks remain limited in several parts of the basin. It carries people, food, timber, minerals and commercial goods across Central Africa.
The river also supports:
- fisheries;
- agriculture;
- drinking-water supply;
- local trade;
- hydropower generation;
- forest-dependent livelihoods.
The Inga Falls region possesses enormous hydropower potential because of the river’s high discharge and steep descent. However, large hydropower projects raise concerns relating to displacement, financing, ecological disruption and unequal access to electricity.
The Congo Basin contains the world’s second-largest tropical rainforest after the Amazon. It stores large quantities of carbon and supports exceptional biodiversity, including bonobos, gorillas, forest elephants and numerous freshwater species.
Major Challenges
The river basin faces increasing pressure from:
- deforestation and commercial logging;
- mining and industrial pollution;
- oil spills and untreated waste;
- overfishing;
- armed conflict and weak governance;
- unplanned hydropower development;
- climate change;
- unsafe and overcrowded river transport.
Mining activities can release toxic substances into rivers, while forest loss increases soil erosion and sedimentation.
The basin is shared by several countries, making regional cooperation essential for managing water, forests, navigation, hydropower and biodiversity.
