Himalayan Griffon Vulture

The Himalayan Griffon Vulture is a large Old World vulture found mainly in the Himalayan region and adjoining Tibetan Plateau. Its scientific name is Gyps himalayensis.

It is important because it is one of the nine vulture species found in India and plays a major ecological role as a scavenger. In recent current affairs, it has been noticed because of rare sightings outside its usual Himalayan range, including parts of central India such as Maharashtra.

Habitat and Distribution

The Himalayan Griffon is mainly associated with high-altitude mountains, cliffs, valleys and open upland landscapes.

Its normal range includes:

  • Himalayas
  • Tibetan Plateau
  • North and North-East India
  • Nepal, Bhutan and Pakistan
  • parts of Central Asia and western China

In India, it is generally seen in Himalayan states such as Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. During winter, especially juveniles may move to lower elevations and sometimes appear far outside their normal range.

Recent rare sightings in Melghat Tiger Reserve and Bor Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra show such dispersal or winter movement patterns.

Ecological Importance

The Himalayan Griffon Vulture is a scavenger. It feeds mainly on carcasses of large mammals and helps clean the ecosystem.

Its ecological role is important because vultures:

  • remove animal carcasses quickly
  • reduce spread of disease from decaying flesh
  • limit growth of feral dog populations around carcass dumps
  • maintain sanitation in mountain and pastoral landscapes

In Himalayan regions, where livestock carcasses and wild ungulate remains are part of the food chain, vultures are crucial natural cleaners. Their decline can disturb carcass disposal systems and increase disease risks.

Conservation Status and Threats

The Himalayan Griffon is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. It is also listed under CITES Appendix II.

Unlike some other Indian vultures such as the White-rumped Vulture and Indian Vulture, the Himalayan Griffon did not suffer the same catastrophic collapse everywhere. However, it remains vulnerable because it belongs to the Gyps group of vultures, which are highly sensitive to toxic veterinary drugs.

Major threats include:

  • poisoning from veterinary drugs such as diclofenac
  • contaminated carcasses
  • food shortage due to changing carcass disposal practices
  • electrocution from power lines
  • disturbance near nesting cliffs
  • habitat pressure in high-altitude landscapes

Diclofenac is especially important because it caused massive declines in South Asian Gyps vultures. Studies have shown that Himalayan Griffons are also susceptible to diclofenac toxicity.

Conservation Relevance in India

India has taken several steps for vulture conservation, especially after the vulture crash caused by veterinary diclofenac.

Important measures include:

  • ban on veterinary use of diclofenac
  • promotion of safer alternatives such as meloxicam
  • Vulture Conservation Breeding Centres
  • Vulture Safe Zones
  • Action Plan for Vulture Conservation in India
  • monitoring of vulture populations and nesting sites

The Vulture Action Plan 2020–25 is important because it focuses on controlling toxic drugs, improving monitoring and strengthening conservation breeding and release programmes.

Recent sightings of Himalayan Griffons in central India are also being linked with vulture recovery and habitat-use changes in some landscapes. However, such sightings do not automatically mean the species is secure; they need to be understood through long-term monitoring.

Conclusion

The Himalayan Griffon Vulture is a high-altitude scavenger of the Himalayan and Tibetan region.

Its importance lies in its role as a natural carcass cleaner, its place among India’s vulture species and its vulnerability to toxic veterinary drugs.

Although it is not as critically endangered as some other Indian vultures, its Near Threatened status shows that continued monitoring, safe veterinary practices and protection of nesting and feeding habitats remain essential.
