Nistar-Class Diving Support Vessels

What are Nistar-Class Diving Support Vessels?

The Nistar class is a class of specialised Diving Support Vessels (DSVs) built for the Indian Navy to support deep-sea diving, submarine rescue and underwater intervention.

The class consists of two ships:

They have been indigenously designed and constructed by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam.

These vessels significantly strengthen India’s ability to conduct complex underwater operations at considerable depths and provide support to submarine rescue missions.

Core Capabilities

Nistar-class vessels are designed for:

  • saturation diving;
  • deep-sea diving operations;
  • air and heliox diving;
  • deployment of remotely operated vehicles;
  • underwater inspection and repair;
  • salvage and recovery;
  • submarine rescue support.

A major capability is their ability to act as a mother ship for Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicles (DSRVs).

DSRVs are specialised rescue vehicles that can descend to a disabled submarine, dock with it and evacuate trapped submariners.

The ships also contain:

  • decompression chambers;
  • diving control systems;
  • medical facilities;
  • life-support systems;
  • underwater communication equipment;
  • dynamic positioning systems.

Saturation Diving

Saturation diving is an advanced diving technique used when divers must work at great depths for long periods.

At depth, body tissues absorb inert gases under high pressure.

Instead of repeatedly decompressing after every dive, saturation divers remain in a pressurised environment for an extended period and undergo decompression only once at the end of the mission.

This:

  • reduces repeated decompression time;
  • allows longer underwater working periods;
  • improves operational efficiency.

Such capability is essential for deep-sea:

  • repair;
  • salvage;
  • submarine intervention;
  • underwater infrastructure work.

Dynamic Positioning and Underwater Operations

A DSV must remain extremely stable while divers or underwater vehicles are operating below it.

The Nistar-class vessels use dynamic positioning systems, which automatically control propulsion and thrusters to maintain the ship’s location despite:

  • currents;
  • waves;
  • wind.

This is critical because even small uncontrolled movements of the mother ship can endanger divers, rescue vehicles and underwater equipment.

The vessels can also support remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) for tasks that may be too deep, dangerous or prolonged for human divers.

Submarine Rescue Role

Submarine rescue is one of the most strategically important roles of the class.

If a submarine becomes disabled underwater, rescue requires:

  • locating the submarine;
  • maintaining a stable surface platform;
  • deploying DSRVs;
  • providing medical and decompression support;
  • coordinating repeated rescue sorties.

Nistar-class vessels provide this entire supporting infrastructure.

They therefore form an important part of India’s submarine safety architecture.

This capability has become increasingly relevant as the Indian Navy expands its conventional and nuclear-powered submarine fleet.

Indigenisation and Strategic Importance

The Nistar class represents a major step in India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding programme.

The ships have substantial indigenous content and demonstrate domestic capability in:

  • specialised naval construction;
  • underwater life-support systems;
  • diving technology;
  • precision positioning;
  • submarine rescue;
  • underwater robotics.

Strategically, these vessels enhance India’s capacity to operate across the Indian Ocean Region.

They can support:

  • Indian submarines;
  • friendly foreign navies;
  • maritime search and rescue;
  • underwater salvage;
  • recovery operations;
  • protection and inspection of critical subsea infrastructure.

They also strengthen India’s role as a net security provider and maritime first responder in the Indian Ocean.

Nistar Class and India’s Wider Underwater Capability

The importance of the Nistar class must be viewed alongside India’s broader development of:

  • submarine fleets;
  • DSRV capability;
  • underwater surveillance;
  • anti-submarine warfare;
  • seabed infrastructure;
  • deep-ocean technology.

As undersea competition increases, navies require not only offensive and surveillance platforms but also robust rescue and support systems.

The Nistar-class DSVs therefore provide India with a specialised capability at the intersection of submarine rescue, deep-sea diving, underwater engineering and maritime strategic preparedness.
