Solar Arrays

Meaning

A solar arrays is a group of interconnected solar photovoltaic panels arranged together to generate electricity from sunlight.

The hierarchy is:

Solar cell → Solar module/panel → Solar array

A single solar panel contains multiple photovoltaic cells. Multiple panels connected together form an array capable of producing a larger amount of electricity.

Solar arrays may be installed on:

  • rooftops;
  • open land;
  • floating platforms;
  • industrial buildings;
  • satellites and spacecraft.

Working Principle

Solar cells are usually made from semiconductor materials such as silicon.

When sunlight falls on the cell, photons transfer energy to electrons in the semiconductor, generating direct-current electricity through the photovoltaic effect.

The electricity generated by individual panels is combined within the array.

A typical solar power system may include:

  • solar panels;
  • mounting structures;
  • wiring and junction boxes;
  • inverter;
  • charge controller;
  • battery storage where required;
  • grid connection.

The inverter converts direct current into alternating current for household, commercial or grid use.

Types of Solar Arrays

Rooftop Solar Arrays

Installed on residential, commercial or industrial rooftops.

Ground-Mounted Arrays

Installed over large areas of land and commonly used in utility-scale solar parks.

Floating Solar Arrays

Mounted on floating structures over reservoirs, lakes or other suitable water bodies.

Tracking Arrays

Panels move during the day to follow the Sun and increase energy capture.

Fixed-Tilt Arrays

Panels remain at a fixed angle chosen according to local solar conditions.

Factors Affecting Output

The electricity generated by a solar array depends on:

  • number and efficiency of panels;
  • intensity of sunlight;
  • panel orientation;
  • tilt angle;
  • shading;
  • temperature;
  • dust accumulation;
  • wiring and inverter efficiency.

Partial shading of even a portion of an array can reduce overall output, particularly where panels are connected in series.

Modern systems may use optimisers or microinverters to reduce such losses.

Advantages

Solar arrays offer several benefits:

  • renewable electricity generation;
  • no direct fuel requirement;
  • low operational emissions;
  • modular design;
  • relatively low maintenance;
  • suitability for decentralised generation;
  • reduction in electricity bills;
  • compatibility with battery storage.

They can be scaled from a few rooftop panels to very large utility-scale solar farms.

Limitations

Major limitations include:

  • intermittent generation;
  • no output at night;
  • lower output during cloudy conditions;
  • requirement for storage or grid balancing;
  • land requirements for large projects;
  • decline in panel performance over time;
  • recycling requirements for end-of-life modules;
  • dependence on critical minerals and manufacturing supply chains.

High temperatures can also reduce photovoltaic efficiency even though solar radiation may be intense.

Solar arrays are central to India’s renewable-energy expansion.

They are used in:

  • rooftop solar;
  • solar parks;
  • agricultural solar pumps;
  • floating solar projects;
  • microgrids;
  • remote-area electrification.

Their expansion supports:

  • energy security;
  • lower fossil-fuel dependence;
  • decentralised power supply;
  • reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions;
  • growth of domestic solar manufacturing.
