Meaning

A stolon is a slender horizontal stem that grows along the surface of the ground or just below it.

It arises from the main plant and produces new roots and shoots at its nodes. Each rooted node can develop into a new plant.

Stolons are therefore a form of vegetative propagation, allowing plants to reproduce without seeds.

Structure and Working

A stolon consists of:

  • nodes;
  • internodes;
  • buds;
  • adventitious roots;
  • new shoots.

As the stolon spreads away from the parent plant, its nodes come into contact with soil. Roots develop downward, while shoots grow upward.

Once established, the new plant may continue to remain connected to the parent plant or become independent.

Examples

Common plants that reproduce through stolons include:

  • strawberry;
  • lawn grasses;
  • mint;
  • spider plant;
  • Bermuda grass.

In medicinal plants such as Picrorhiza kurroa, stolon-like underground stems help the plant spread and regenerate in its natural habitat.

Stolon and Rhizome

FeatureStolonRhizome
PositionUsually above or near the soil surfaceUsually underground
StructureSlender and elongatedThick and fleshy
Main functionSpread and vegetative reproductionFood storage and reproduction
Direction of growthHorizontalHorizontal
ExamplesStrawberry and grassesGinger and turmeric

Both are modified stems and contain nodes, internodes and buds.

Importance

Stolons help plants:

  • reproduce rapidly;
  • spread over a large area;
  • survive when seed production is limited;
  • colonise disturbed habitats;
  • regenerate after grazing or damage.

In commercially valuable medicinal plants, excessive removal of stolons can reduce natural regeneration. Sustainable harvesting should therefore leave enough of the stem and parent plant intact.

Conclusion

Stolons are horizontal modified stems that allow plants to spread and produce new individuals from their nodes. They play an important role in vegetative reproduction, ecological survival and regeneration.
