Context: Sugar Export Ban
Amid the West Asia crisis and inflation concerns, the Government banned export of raw, white, and refined sugar till September 30 to ensure domestic supply and protect foreign exchange reserves.
Why Export Ban?
- Rising crude oil and shipping costs
- Fear of weak monsoon and lower sugar output
- Inflation and food security concerns
- Strait of Hormuz disruptions affecting energy trade
Sugar Stock Position
- Production (2025-26): ~275 lakh tonnes
- Opening stock: 50 lakh tonnes
- Domestic demand: 280 lakh tonnes
- Expected closing stock: 45 lakh tonnes, lowest since 2016-17
