Tejas Express

Meaning

Tejas Express is a category of premium, semi-high-speed passenger trains introduced by Indian Railways to provide faster inter-city travel with upgraded onboard services and modern coaches.

It is designed primarily for medium-distance, high-demand routes.

Key Features

Tejas trains typically provide:

  • air-conditioned chair-car or executive-class seating;
  • modern LHB-based coaches;
  • automatic or semi-automatic doors on selected rakes;
  • onboard infotainment and passenger-information systems;
  • improved interiors and bio-toilets;
  • CCTV surveillance and fire-safety systems;
  • catering and enhanced passenger amenities, depending on the service.

Operational speeds depend on the route and permissible track speed rather than on the train category alone.

Introduction

The first Tejas Express service was launched in 2017 between Mumbai and Goa.

The concept formed part of Indian Railways’ effort to upgrade inter-city passenger services without immediately requiring an entirely new high-speed rail network.

IRCTC-Operated Tejas Trains

Tejas also became significant because selected services were operated by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) rather than directly through the conventional Indian Railways operating model.

The Lucknow–New Delhi Tejas Express, launched in 2019, became the first major train service operated by IRCTC under this model.

This experiment introduced greater emphasis on:

  • service quality;
  • commercial management;
  • dynamic pricing;
  • passenger compensation mechanisms;
  • performance-oriented train operations.

However, the railway infrastructure, signalling and broader network remained part of the Indian Railways system.

Tejas Express and Tejas Rajdhani

The term Tejas is also used for upgraded trainsets deployed on some long-distance premium services, including Tejas Rajdhani trains.

A Tejas Rajdhani combines:

  • the long-distance Rajdhani service model;
  • upgraded Tejas-type coaches and passenger amenities.

Therefore, all trains using Tejas coaches should not automatically be treated as identical to the original Tejas Express service model.

Significance

Tejas Express is important because it represents:

  • modernisation of passenger rolling stock;
  • experimentation with premium inter-city services;
  • greater involvement of IRCTC in train operations;
  • introduction of service-quality benchmarks;
  • transition towards faster and more commercially differentiated rail services.

It also preceded the wider expansion of modern train products such as Vande Bharat Express.

Limitations

Its performance remains dependent on:

  • track capacity;
  • signalling systems;
  • congestion on shared railway corridors;
  • route-specific speed restrictions;
  • maintenance and punctuality.

Thus, premium rolling stock alone cannot deliver consistently higher speeds without parallel investment in railway infrastructure.

Conclusion

Tejas Express represents an intermediate stage in the modernisation of Indian passenger railways, combining upgraded coaches, premium services and limited experimentation with alternative operating models. Its significance lies less in absolute speed and more in introducing higher standards of comfort, service quality and commercial management into conventional inter-city rail transport.
