Meaning
A Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR) Account is a type of term deposit account that allows Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to maintain deposits in designated foreign currencies in Indian banks.
It is governed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

1. Currency Denomination
- Maintained in designated foreign currencies such as:
- US Dollar (USD)
- Pound Sterling (GBP)
- Euro (EUR)
- Japanese Yen (JPY)

2. Type of Account
- Only Term Deposit (Fixed Deposit)
- Tenure: 1 year to 5 years
3. Repatriation
- Both principal and interest are fully repatriable (can be transferred abroad freely).
4. Exchange Rate Protection
- Since deposits are maintained in foreign currency, the depositor is protected from exchange rate fluctuations.
5. Joint Holding
- Can be jointly held with another NRI.
Interest and Taxation
- Interest rates are determined by banks, subject to RBI guidelines.
- Interest earned is tax-free in India for NRIs (as long as NRI status is maintained).
- No TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) is applicable.

- Overseas Citizens of India (OCI)
- Persons of Indian Origin (PIO)
Residents of India cannot open FCNR accounts.
