Delimitation in India: Government Assures No Cut in South’s Seat Share

Amid concerns that delimitation may reduce the political representation of southern States, the Prime Minister and Home Minister assured Parliament that their share will not decline.

What has been assured

1. No reduction in South’s representation
   • Clear assurance that southern States’ seat share will not decrease
   • Claims of reduction termed as misconception
   
2. Increase in total seats
   • Lok Sabha strength likely to increase significantly (~50% expansion)
   • South’s seats will rise from 129 to 195
   
3. Proportional share maintained
   • Even after increase, percentage share remains almost same (~23.7% → ~23.8%)
