Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)

Introduction

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a clean-burning gaseous fuel produced by compressing natural gas, primarily composed of methane (CH₄), to about 200–250 bar. Compressing the gas significantly reduces its volume, making it suitable for storage and transportation.

CNG is widely used as an alternative to petrol and diesel in the transport, industrial and commercial sectors due to its lower emissions, high energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Composition

Natural gas mainly consists of:

  • Methane (CH₄): 85–95%
  • Ethane (C₂H₆)
  • Propane (C₃H₈)
  • Butane (C₄H₁₀)
  • Small quantities of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulphide and water vapour.

Methane is the principal combustible component and provides the energy value of CNG.

Production of CNG

The production process involves:

  1. Extraction of natural gas from conventional or unconventional gas fields.
  2. Removal of impurities such as water vapour, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and other contaminants.
  3. Compression of purified natural gas to 200–250 bar using high-pressure compressors.
  4. Storage in specially designed high-pressure cylinders before distribution to consumers.

Properties

  • Colourless and odourless in its natural form (an odorant is added for leak detection).
  • Lighter than air, allowing leaked gas to disperse upward.
  • High octane rating (around 120–130), enabling efficient combustion.
  • Lower carbon content than petrol and diesel.
  • Non-toxic and relatively safer because it has a narrow flammability range.

CNG is widely used in:

  • Auto-rickshaws
  • Taxis
  • Light commercial vehicles

It is one of India’s most important alternative transport fuels.

Used as fuel in:

Advantages

  • Very low particulate matter (PM)

Thus, it significantly improves urban air quality.

Energy Efficiency

Its high octane rating ensures efficient combustion and reduces engine knocking.

Cost-Effective

CNG is generally cheaper than petrol and diesel, reducing transportation costs.

Reduced Engine Wear

Clean combustion results in fewer carbon deposits, extending engine life and reducing maintenance.

Improved Energy Security

Greater use of domestic natural gas can reduce dependence on imported crude oil.

  • Limited network of CNG filling stations in many regions.
  • High initial cost of vehicle conversion.
  • Reduced luggage space due to storage cylinders.
  • Lower energy density than liquid fuels, resulting in shorter driving range.
  • Dependence on natural gas availability and infrastructure.

After purification, CBG has fuel properties similar to CNG, allowing it to be used in the same vehicles and gas infrastructure.

Government Initiatives

City Gas Distribution (CGD) Network

Implemented under the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), the CGD network expands access to:

  • CNG for transport.
  • Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for households and industries.

SATAT Initiative

The Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative, launched in 2018 by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, promotes the production and use of Compressed Biogas (CBG) as a sustainable substitute for CNG.

National Gas Grid

India is expanding its natural gas pipeline infrastructure through the National Gas Grid to improve the availability of natural gas across the country.
