Introduction
JIMEX (Japan–India Maritime Exercise) is a bilateral naval exercise conducted between the Indian Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). It aims to enhance maritime interoperability, strengthen naval cooperation and improve coordination in ensuring a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific.
The exercise is conducted periodically in India, Japan or the Indian Ocean region.
Background
- The first edition of JIMEX was held in 2012 off the coast of Japan.
- It forms an important pillar of the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
- The exercise complements other bilateral defence engagements such as Dharma Guardian, Veer Guardian, the 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue and the Defence Policy Dialogue.
