Expanded Structure
The 2026 FIFA World Cup Tournament Format introduced an expanded format with 48 national teams, replacing the earlier 32-team structure.
The tournament consists of:
- 12 groups of four teams
- 72 group-stage matches
- 32 teams entering the knockout stage
- 104 matches in total
The 2026 tournament is jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, making it the first men’s World Cup hosted by three countries.
Group Stage
Each team plays one match against every other team in its group. Therefore, each team plays three group-stage matches.
Teams receive:
- three points for a win;
- one point for a draw;
- zero points for a defeat.
The following teams qualify for the Round of 32:
- the top two teams from each of the 12 groups;
- the eight best third-placed teams across all groups.
This produces a total of 32 knockout-stage teams.
When teams finish with equal points, their position is determined through tie-breaking criteria such as goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head results and disciplinary records.
Knockout Stage
The knockout stage follows this sequence:
Round of 32 → Round of 16 → Quarter-finals → Semi-finals → Final
A third-place match is also held between the two losing semi-finalists.
Each knockout match must produce a winner. If the score remains level after 90 minutes:
- two periods of extra time are played;
- each period lasts 15 minutes;
- a penalty shoot-out is conducted if the score remains tied.
A team reaching the final plays eight matches during the tournament, compared with seven matches under the earlier 32-team format.
Importance of the Expanded Format
The 48-team structure provides greater representation to Africa, Asia, North and Central America, and other developing football regions.
It offers more countries the opportunity to participate in the World Cup and broadens the geographical reach of the tournament.
However, the expanded structure also raises concerns related to:
- greater physical burden on players;
- longer tournament duration;
- increased travel requirements;
- unequal quality among participating teams;
- complexity in comparing third-placed teams;
- environmental impact of a larger tournament.
