Meaning
Dharmachakra Pravartana means the turning of the Wheel of Dharma. It refers to the first sermon delivered by Gautama Buddha after attaining enlightenment.
The sermon was delivered at Sarnath, near Varanasi, in the Deer Park known as Mrigadava.
Through this sermon, the Buddha began the public teaching of Buddhism and established the basic framework of Buddhist philosophy.
Historical Context
After attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, the Buddha travelled to Sarnath to meet five ascetics who had earlier practised severe austerities with him.
