Polymer banknotes are currency notes printed on a thin, flexible plastic-based substrate instead of conventional cotton-based banknote paper.
They are generally made from biaxially oriented polypropylene, a durable polymer that can withstand moisture, repeated folding and rough handling.
Polymer notes perform the same monetary function as paper notes but differ in their material, security features, durability and disposal process.
Security Features
Polymer provides security features that are difficult to reproduce using ordinary printing methods.
Common features include:

- colour-changing elements;
- raised printing;
- micro-lettering;
- intricate background patterns;

Limitations
Polymer banknotes also present certain disadvantages.

- They can become slippery and may stick together when new.
- Excessive heat may shrink or damage them.
- Sharp folds can create permanent creases.
- Existing printing and processing machinery may require modification.
- Recycling requires specialised collection and processing facilities.
Their environmental advantage is not automatic. Although they last longer and can be recycled, they are made from fossil-fuel-based plastic. Their overall impact depends on production energy, circulation life and end-of-life recycling.
Indian Context
India has examined the possibility of introducing polymer banknotes and previously considered limited trials in lower denominations.
However, polymer banknotes have not been introduced into regular circulation in India. Existing Indian currency notes continue to use specialised banknote paper with security threads, watermarks, colour-changing elements and other anti-counterfeiting features.
Before adopting polymer currency on a large scale, India would need to assess:
- suitability for its hot and diverse climatic conditions;
- compatibility with ATMs and currency-processing machines;
- cost of changing printing infrastructure;
- public acceptance;
- disposal and recycling systems;
- comparative resistance to counterfeiting and physical damage.
