Meaning and Basic Idea

Metabolomics is the study of all the small chemical substances produced or used by cells and organisms. These substances are called metabolites, and their complete set is called the metabolome.

Metabolites include:

  • sugars;
  • amino acids;
  • fatty acids;
  • organic acids;
  • hormones;
  • other products of normal cell activity.

Metabolomics therefore shows what is actually happening inside a cell or body at a given time.

A useful distinction:

  • Genomics: what genes are present.
  • Transcriptomics: which genes are active.
  • Proteomics: which proteins are being produced.
  • Metabolomics: what chemical changes are finally occurring.

How It Is Studied

Scientists analyse metabolites using techniques such as:

  • Mass Spectrometry (MS);
  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy;
  • chromatography combined with mass spectrometry.

Samples may include:

  • blood;
  • urine;
  • saliva;
  • tissues;
  • plant material.

The resulting metabolic pattern can then be compared between healthy and diseased conditions or before and after a treatment.

Applications and Significance

Metabolomics is useful in:

  • disease diagnosis and biomarker discovery;
  • cancer and diabetes research;
  • drug development;
  • nutrition and personalised medicine;
  • studying gut-microbiome effects;
  • crop improvement;
  • detecting plant responses to drought, heat or disease.

For example, a disease may change the levels of specific metabolites in blood before obvious symptoms appear. Such changes can potentially serve as early biological markers.

Metabolomics is especially valuable because metabolites are influenced by genes, diet, medicines, environment and lifestyle, making them a close reflection of the body’s current functional state.

However, metabolite levels can change rapidly and are strongly affected by food intake, time of day, stress and sample handling.

Metabolomics therefore provides a chemical snapshot of how the body or cell is functioning at that moment, making it one of the most direct ways to study biological activity.
