Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve

Location and Extent

The Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve is a major biodiversity-rich landscape located in the southern Western Ghats.

It extends across parts of:

  • Kerala;
  • Tamil Nadu.

The reserve includes important forest landscapes associated with the Agasthyamalai Hills and adjoining protected areas.

UNESCO Recognition

Agasthyamalai was included in UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 2016.

The designation recognises landscapes that combine:

  • biodiversity conservation;
  • sustainable development;
  • scientific research;
  • community participation.

A biosphere reserve is generally organised into:

  • core zones;
  • buffer zones;
  • transition areas.

Biodiversity Importance

Agasthyamalai is part of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot and supports high levels of species richness and endemism.

Its habitats include:

  • tropical evergreen forests;
  • semi-evergreen forests;
  • moist deciduous forests;
  • montane ecosystems.

Important fauna include:

The region also contains a rich diversity of medicinal plants.

Protected Areas

The biosphere landscape includes or is associated with protected areas such as:

  • Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve;
  • Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary;
  • Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary;
  • Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary.

These protected areas provide habitat connectivity across the southern Western Ghats.

Cultural Importance

The region has strong cultural and traditional significance.

It is associated with Sage Agastya, after whom the hills are named.

Local and indigenous communities possess traditional knowledge related to:

  • medicinal plants;
  • forest resources;
  • agriculture;
  • biodiversity.

Conservation therefore requires protection of both ecological and cultural landscapes.

Ecological Significance

The reserve performs important ecosystem functions such as:

  • watershed protection;
  • carbon storage;
  • regulation of local climate;
  • soil conservation;
  • maintenance of river systems.

Several rivers originating in the Western Ghats depend on these forested catchments.

Major Threats

Key concerns include:

  • habitat fragmentation;
  • infrastructure development;
  • invasive species;
  • forest fires;
  • tourism pressure;
  • human-wildlife conflict;
  • climate change.

Loss of ecological connectivity can particularly affect wide-ranging species such as elephants and large carnivores.

Conservation Priorities

Important measures include:

  • protection of wildlife corridors;
  • control of invasive species;
  • regulation of tourism;
  • community-based conservation;
  • watershed protection;
  • monitoring of endemic species;
  • integration of traditional ecological knowledge.

Conclusion

The Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve is an ecologically and culturally important landscape of the southern Western Ghats. Its significance lies in high biodiversity, endemic species, watershed value and the integration of conservation with sustainable livelihoods.
