Context: Ebola PHEIC 2026
WHO declared the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) after over 300 suspected cases and 88 deaths linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus.

1. Ebola — Basics

  • Viral haemorrhagic disease caused by Ebolavirus.
  • First identified in 1976 near the Ebola River (DRC).
  • Natural host: Fruit bats.
  • Spread through blood and other bodily fluids via direct contact.
  • High fatality rate.

2. Bundibugyo Strain

  • Rare Ebola variant first identified in Uganda (2007).
  • No fully approved vaccine or targeted therapeutics available.

3. WHO — Basics

  • UN specialized health agency.
  • Established: 1948
  • Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland

Objectives:

  • Global disease surveillance
  • Coordinating health emergencies
  • Vaccination & immunisation programs
  • Setting international health standards

4. PHEIC vs Pandemic

  • PHEIC: Serious international health risk requiring coordinated response; spread may remain region-specific.
  • Pandemic: Sustained worldwide spread across multiple countries/continents.
