Introduction
The Ganges River Dolphin (Platanista gangetica) is a freshwater cetacean endemic to the Ganga–Brahmaputra–Meghna and Karnaphuli–Sangu river systems of India, Nepal and Bangladesh. It is one of the few surviving species of freshwater dolphins in the world and serves as an important indicator of the ecological health of river ecosystems.

- It surfaces every 30–120 seconds to breathe through a blowhole.

Accidental Bycatch
Dolphins are often entangled in fishing nets, resulting in injury or mortality.
Sand Mining
Excessive sand mining alters river morphology, destroys deep pools and disturbs breeding habitats.
Vessel Traffic
Increasing boat traffic, dredging and underwater noise interfere with echolocation and increase the risk of collisions.
Climate Change

Located at Patna, Bihar, the Centre undertakes research on dolphin ecology, conservation biology, habitat management and capacity building.
Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary
Located in Bhagalpur district, Bihar, this is India’s only dedicated dolphin sanctuary, established along a stretch of the Ganga River to protect the species and its habitat.
Namami Gange Programme
River rejuvenation efforts under the Namami Gange Programme improve water quality and ecological flows, indirectly benefiting the Ganges River Dolphin.
