Meaning
The Golden Boot is awarded to the player who scores the highest number of goals in a football tournament. At the FIFA World Cup, it identifies the tournament’s leading goal scorer.
The award was initially known as the Golden Shoe when it was formally introduced in 1982. It was later renamed the Golden Boot.
Goals Included
The following goals are counted:
- Goals scored during normal playing time
- Goals scored during extra time
- Goals scored from penalties during normal or extra time
Goals scored during a penalty shoot-out are not included because a shoot-out is used only to determine the winner of a tied match.
Tie-Breaking Rules
When two or more players score the same number of goals, the winner is decided through tie-breakers:
- The player with more assists is ranked higher.
- If assists are also equal, the player who played fewer minutes is ranked higher.
- This rewards the player who achieved the same result more efficiently.
The second- and third-highest-ranked scorers receive the Silver Boot and Bronze Boot.
