Origin and Course
The Lohit River is a major eastern tributary of the Brahmaputra. It originates in the mountainous region of eastern Tibet, where its upper course is commonly known as the Zayul Chu.
The river enters India through Anjaw district in Arunachal Pradesh and flows through the deeply forested and mountainous Lohit Valley. It passes near places such as Kibithu, Walong, Hayuliang, Tezu and Parshuram Kund before entering the plains of Assam.
In Assam, the Lohit joins the Dibang River and then meets the Siang. The combined river forms the main channel of the Brahmaputra near Sadiya. The Central Water Commission lists the Lohit among the principal tributaries of the Brahmaputra in India.
Physical Characteristics
The river has different characteristics along its course.
In the upper Himalayan region, it flows through:
- steep gorges;
- narrow valleys;
- rocky channels;
- dense forests;
- areas of strong current and high gradient.
As it approaches the Assam plains, the river becomes wider and develops braided channels, sandbars and floodplains.
The Lohit is mainly fed by:
- snowmelt;
- glaciers;
- monsoon rainfall;
- numerous mountain streams.
Its high gradient, heavy rainfall and large sediment load make it a powerful and highly dynamic river. During the monsoon, it may experience rapid increases in discharge, bank erosion and flooding.
Important tributaries and associated streams of the Lohit system include the Noa-Dihing, Kamlang, Tidding, Digaru and Delai rivers.
Ecological and Cultural Importance
The Lohit Valley forms part of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot. Its riverine and forest ecosystems support diverse fish, mammals, birds and plant species.
The river basin is connected with ecologically important landscapes such as:
- Kamlang Wildlife Sanctuary;
- Namdapha landscape;
- Dibru-Saikhowa National Park;
- river islands and wetlands of the upper Brahmaputra plains.
The river supports agriculture, fishing, local transport and the livelihoods of communities living in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
Parshuram Kund, located in the lower reaches of the Lohit in Arunachal Pradesh, is an important pilgrimage site. According to tradition, Sage Parashurama performed penance there. Large numbers of pilgrims visit the site during Makar Sankranti.
Strategic and Developmental Importance
The Lohit Valley lies close to India’s borders with China and Myanmar. Settlements such as Kibithu and Walong give the region considerable strategic importance.
The river has significant hydropower potential because of:
- steep elevation differences;
- high water discharge;
- narrow mountain valleys;
- perennial flow.
Hydropower development can contribute to electricity generation, regional connectivity and economic development. However, large projects may also affect natural river flow, forests, fish migration, sediment movement and local communities.
Roads, bridges and other infrastructure along the valley are important for both civilian development and border security. At the same time, construction in this geologically fragile region increases the risks of landslides, erosion and habitat fragmentation.
Environmental Concerns
The Lohit basin faces several environmental challenges:
- hydropower and dam construction;
- deforestation and road expansion;
- landslides and soil erosion;
- sand and gravel extraction;
- disturbance of aquatic habitats;
- increased flooding and bank erosion;
- climate-related changes in rainfall and snowmelt.
Because the Lohit carries water and sediment into the Brahmaputra, major changes in its flow can affect downstream floodplains, wetlands and river channels in Assam.
Development in the basin therefore requires:
- cumulative environmental-impact assessment;
- maintenance of environmental flows;
- protection of forests and wildlife corridors;
- scientific management of sediment;
- consultation with local and tribal communities;
- improved flood and landslide forecasting.
