Pinaka Long-Range Guided Rocket

Context

The DRDO successfully flight-tested the Pinaka Long-Range Guided Rocket (LRGR) from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, Odisha, on 8 July 2026. It was tested at a user-defined minimum range of 60 km and struck the target with the planned precision.

About Pinaka LRGR

Pinaka LRGR is an indigenously developed, precision-guided artillery rocket designed for the Indian Army’s Pinaka Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher system.

The LRGR-120 has a maximum range of 120 km. Its maiden flight test at this maximum range was successfully conducted on 29 December 2025. Thus, the July 2026 trial tested its minimum operational range and not its maximum capability.

Development

The rocket has been designed by:

  • Armament Research and Development Establishment
  • High Energy Materials Research Laboratory

It was developed with support from the Defence Research and Development Laboratory and Research Centre Imarat. The trials were coordinated by the Integrated Test Range and Proof and Experimental Establishment.

Key Features

  • Maximum strike range of approximately 120 km
  • Guided system for precision strikes
  • Capable of performing planned in-flight manoeuvres
  • Can be launched from the existing in-service Pinaka launcher
  • Enables Pinaka rockets of different ranges to be fired from the same launcher
  • Provides longer-range engagement without requiring an entirely new launching platform

Significance

The LRGR considerably extends the reach of the indigenous Pinaka artillery system and allows the Army to strike important enemy targets from safer distances. Its compatibility with existing launchers reduces induction costs and improves operational flexibility.
