Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV)

Introduction

The Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) is a three-stage, low-cost, on-demand launch vehicle developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for launching small satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). It is designed to provide quick, flexible and cost-effective access to space, catering to the growing global demand for launching small satellites.

Background

  • Developed by: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
  • Developed to complement PSLV by serving the rapidly growing small satellite market.
  • Designed for rapid assembly, minimal infrastructure and shorter launch preparation time.

Objectives

  • Provide dedicated launches for small satellites.
  • Reduce launch cost and turnaround time.
  • Enhance India’s competitiveness in the global commercial launch market.
  • Support startups, private space companies and academic institutions.
  • Promote the Indian space economy under the Indian Space Policy, 2023.

Key Features

  • Three solid propulsion stages with a Velocity Trimming Module (VTM) as the terminal stage.
  • Capable of launch-on-demand with minimal infrastructure.
  • Modular and simplified design.
  • Short integration time (a few days instead of weeks).
  • High degree of automation.
  • Suitable for multiple orbital missions.

Technical Specifications

  • Height: Approximately 34 metres
  • Lift-off Mass: Approximately 120 tonnes
  • Stages: Three solid stages + Velocity Trimming Module (VTM)
  • Payload Capacity:
    • Up to 500 kg to a 500 km Low Earth Orbit (LEO)
    • Up to 300 kg to a Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO)

Aatmanirbhar Bharat

Promotes indigenous launch capability and supports the growth of India’s space industry.

Recent Developments

  • SSLV-D1 (August 2022): First developmental flight; the launch vehicle performed as planned, but satellites were placed in an unstable orbit due to a software issue in the Velocity Trimming Module.
  • SSLV-D2 (February 2023): Successfully placed EOS-07 and co-passenger satellites into the intended orbit, validating the design.
  • SSLV-D3 (August 2024): Successfully placed the EOS-08 Earth observation satellite and the SR-0 DEMOSAT into orbit. This was the third developmental flight and completed ISRO’s developmental phase for SSLV.
  • Following the successful completion of developmental flights, ISRO initiated the transfer of SSLV technology to the Indian private sector for commercial production and operations.

Way Forward

  • Accelerate commercial production through industry partnerships.
  • Increase launch frequency to capture the global small satellite market.
  • Develop reusable and next-generation launch technologies.
  • Strengthen collaboration with IN-SPACe and NewSpace India Limited (NSIL).
  • Expand launch services for international customers.

Conclusion

The Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) is a significant addition to India’s launch vehicle fleet, offering a cost-effective and responsive solution for the rapidly expanding small satellite market. By supporting commercial launches, private-sector participation and strategic missions, SSLV strengthens India’s position as a leading spacefaring nation and advances the vision of a vibrant indigenous space ecosystem.
