Meaning and Core Principles

The System of Rice Intensification, commonly known as SRI, is a method of rice cultivation that seeks to increase productivity while using fewer seeds and less water.

It is not a new rice variety. It is a set of crop-management practices based on:

  • transplanting young seedlings;
  • planting seedlings singly rather than in bunches;
  • maintaining wider spacing;
  • avoiding continuous flooding;
  • improving soil aeration;
  • using organic manure and careful weed management.

The method was first developed in Madagascar and later adopted in several rice-growing countries, including India.

Cultivation Method

Under conventional rice cultivation, older seedlings are often planted closely in continuously flooded fields. SRI modifies these practices.

Its major components include:

  • transplanting seedlings at a young age, usually around 8–15 days;
  • planting one seedling per hill;
  • maintaining wider and regular spacing;
  • keeping the soil moist rather than permanently flooded;
  • using a mechanical weeder to control weeds and aerate the soil;
  • increasing the use of compost and organic matter.

Wider spacing reduces competition among plants for sunlight, nutrients and water. Better soil aeration encourages stronger roots and greater tillering.

Benefits

SRI can provide several agricultural and environmental benefits:

  • lower seed requirement;
  • reduced irrigation-water use;
  • stronger root development;
  • increased number of productive tillers;
  • higher yield under suitable conditions;
  • reduced methane emissions from paddy fields;
  • improved soil biological activity;
  • greater resistance to drought and lodging.

Since fields are not continuously flooded, anaerobic conditions decline and methane-producing microorganisms become less active.

However, intermittent irrigation may increase nitrous oxide emissions in some conditions. The overall environmental impact depends on water, fertiliser and soil management.

Limitations

SRI is knowledge-intensive and requires precise crop management.

Major challenges include:

  • need for careful handling of young seedlings;
  • higher labour demand during transplanting and weeding;
  • requirement of reliable control over irrigation;
  • difficulty in maintaining uniform spacing;
  • limited availability of suitable mechanical weeders;
  • uneven results across soil types and regions;
  • reluctance of farmers to change established practices.

The method may be difficult where farmers depend on irregular canal supplies or where fields cannot be drained effectively.

It is therefore not a fixed package and must be adapted to local rainfall, soil, labour and irrigation conditions.

Indian Context

SRI has been promoted in several Indian states as a water-saving and climate-resilient rice-cultivation method.

Its wider adoption requires:

  • farmer training and field demonstrations;
  • access to mechanical weeders and markers;
  • improved irrigation and drainage;
  • locally suitable rice varieties;
  • support through agricultural-extension services;
  • integration with soil testing and balanced fertiliser use.

Related approaches include direct-seeded rice and alternate wetting and drying, though these are distinct cultivation methods.

Conclusion

The System of Rice Intensification seeks to produce more rice with fewer seeds, less water and healthier soils. Its success depends on careful management, reliable irrigation control and adaptation to local farming conditions.
