Yemen Conflict: Saudi Strikes on UAE-Backed Groups | UPSC

Context
The Yemen conflict, ongoing since 2014, has seen shifting alliances within the Saudi Arabia–led coalition. While Saudi Arabia backs Yemen’s internationally recognised government, the UAE supports the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a southern separatist group.

Summary:

  • Saudi warplanes struck UAE-backed STC forces in southern Yemen, particularly in Hadramout governorate.
  • The strikes followed an attempt by Saudi-backed National Shield Forces to take over STC camps; the STC refused to withdraw.
  • Saudi Arabia demanded withdrawal of STC fighters as part of de-escalation, but the STC resisted.
  • Tensions escalated after the STC expanded into Hadramout and Mahra, areas bordering Saudi Arabia and important for security and energy routes.
  • The episode highlights the Saudi–UAE rift within the anti-Houthi camp, even as both oppose the Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
  • Saudi Arabia termed the action a “pre-emptive, non-escalatory” measure to prevent instability.

Methane Emissions in Rice Farming: Mitigation Methods | UPSC

Context
India’s rice cultivation is a major source of methane emissions due to traditional continuous flooding of paddy fields. As methane is a high-impact greenhouse gas, reducing emissions from agriculture has become essential for India’s climate commitments, water conservation, and sustainable farming, without hurting farmer incomes.

What is AWD?

Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) is a water-management practice in rice farming where fields are not kept continuously flooded, but are allowed to dry intermittently before re-irrigation.

Why AWD is proposed

  • Continuous flooding → oxygen-free (anaerobic) soil
  • Anaerobic microbes → methane production
  • AWD introduces oxygen into soil, disrupting methane-producing microbes

How AWD works

  • Normal flooding in early growth stage
  • Later, water level allowed to fall 10–15 cm below soil surface
  • Field re-flooded after drying
  • Cycle repeated till flowering stage

Outcomes

  • Reduces methane emissions
  • Saves water
  • No yield loss when properly implemented
  • Emission reductions can generate carbon credits, giving farmers additional income

Western Ghats Biodiversity: Galaxy Frogs Near Extinction | UPSC

Context
A scientific study has warned that 7 of the world’s rarest “galaxy frog” species, found only in the Western Ghats of Kerala, are now presumed dead. The study links their disappearance to the rise in photo-tourism, where frequent human intrusion disturbed their fragile micro-habitats.

Galaxy Frog

  • Galaxy frogs are tiny, rare frogs found only under rotten logs in the Western Ghats.
  • They are named for their star-like speckled skin, resembling a galaxy.
  • These frogs are highly habitat-specific and extremely sensitive to disturbance.
  • Excessive photography, handling, use of camera flash, and movement of logs disrupted their feeding and breeding.
  • As a result, several species have vanished from their known locations.
