NCERT Textbook Cartoon Controversy: Supreme Court Orders Review Panel

Context: Supreme Court asked a Justice Indu Malhotra-led panel to review cartoons in National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks after controversy over Class 8 Social Science content on judiciary and concerns regarding children of “impressionable age”.

1. Supreme Court’s Concern:

  • Solicitor General argued textbooks are not ideal spaces for satire/lampooning.
  • Court had earlier initiated contempt proceedings and sought review of such content.
