Golden Ball

Meaning

The Golden Ball is awarded to the best overall player of a major football tournament, particularly the FIFA World Cup. It recognises the player who has made the greatest individual contribution throughout the competition. The winner can be a forward, midfielder, defender or goalkeeper.

Basis of Selection

The award is not determined by a single statistic. The selection considers:

  • Overall impact on matches
  • Consistency throughout the tournament
  • Technical ability and tactical intelligence
  • Creativity and goal contribution
  • Leadership and influence on teammates
  • Performance in important knockout matches

A player does not need to belong to the tournament-winning team. A player from the runner-up or another high-performing team may also receive the award.

Award Structure

The highest-ranked player receives the Golden Ball. The players finishing second and third receive the Silver Ball and Bronze Ball, respectively.

The modern FIFA World Cup Golden Ball was officially introduced in 1982. However, outstanding players from earlier World Cups were also recognised retrospectively.

Notable Winners

Some prominent winners include:

  • Paolo Rossi – 1982
  • Diego Maradona – 1986
  • Ronaldo Nazário – 1998
  • Zinedine Zidane – 2006
  • Diego Forlán – 2010
  • Lionel Messi – 2014 and 2022
  • Luka Modrić – 2018

Lionel Messi became the first player to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Ball twice.

Importance

The Golden Ball is considered the most prestigious individual award at the World Cup because it recognises the tournament’s most complete and influential player. Unlike the Golden Boot, it is not limited to goals. It rewards leadership, playmaking, defensive contribution, consistency and the ability to influence the overall outcome of matches.
