Meaning
The Golden Ball is awarded to the best overall player of a major football tournament, particularly the FIFA World Cup. It recognises the player who has made the greatest individual contribution throughout the competition. The winner can be a forward, midfielder, defender or goalkeeper.
Basis of Selection
The award is not determined by a single statistic. The selection considers:
- Overall impact on matches
- Consistency throughout the tournament
- Technical ability and tactical intelligence
- Creativity and goal contribution
- Leadership and influence on teammates
- Performance in important knockout matches
A player does not need to belong to the tournament-winning team. A player from the runner-up or another high-performing team may also receive the award.
