Overview
The All India Tiger Estimation, earlier referred to as the All India Tiger Census, is a nationwide scientific exercise used to assess the population, distribution and habitat status of wild tigers in India.
It is conducted once every four years by the National Tiger Conservation Authority in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India, state forest departments and conservation partners.
The exercise began in its present scientific form in 2006. Subsequent estimation cycles were completed in 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022.
It covers tiger reserves as well as forest areas and wildlife corridors located outside protected areas.
Estimation Methodology
The estimation does not involve physically counting every tiger. It combines field surveys, camera-trap photographs and statistical modelling.
The exercise broadly involves:
- recording tiger signs such as pugmarks, scat and scrape marks;
- estimating prey availability and human disturbance;
- assessing vegetation, water and habitat conditions;
- installing camera traps at selected locations;
- identifying individual tigers from their unique stripe patterns;
- applying spatially explicit capture-recapture models to estimate population.
Each tiger has a distinct stripe pattern, allowing researchers to identify individuals from photographs taken by camera traps.
The estimation also records co-predators, prey species, habitat quality and pressures such as roads, settlements, grazing and forest fragmentation.
Findings of the 2022 Estimation
The fifth estimation cycle was conducted in 2022 and remains the latest completed national assessment.
India’s tiger population was estimated at 3,682, within a statistical range of 3,167 to 3,925.
The population increased from:
- 1,411 in 2006;
- 1,706 in 2010;
- 2,226 in 2014;
- 2,967 in 2018;
- 3,682 in 2022.
The results showed an average annual increase of approximately 6.1% in landscapes that were consistently sampled.
Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest estimated tiger population, followed by Karnataka, Uttarakhand and Maharashtra.
Tiger populations are concentrated mainly in five major landscapes:
- Shivalik Hills and Gangetic Plains;
- Central India and Eastern Ghats;
- Western Ghats;
- North-Eastern Hills and Brahmaputra Floodplains;
- Sundarbans.
Importance and Conservation Concerns
The estimation helps authorities:
- monitor changes in tiger populations;
- identify breeding populations and movement corridors;
- evaluate the effectiveness of tiger reserves;
- detect areas experiencing population decline;
- plan habitat and prey restoration;
- guide anti-poaching and conflict-management measures.
An increase in the national total does not mean that all tiger landscapes are equally secure. Some populations remain isolated, while others face habitat loss, infrastructure development and increasing human–tiger conflict.
Major concerns include:
- fragmentation of wildlife corridors;
- road, railway and mining projects;
- poaching and illegal wildlife trade;
- decline of prey species;
- forest degradation;
- conflict near reserve boundaries;
- small and isolated populations in parts of north-eastern India.
Conservation must therefore extend beyond tiger reserves to adjoining forests, corridors and community landscapes.
Limitations and Way Forward
Tiger estimation involves statistical uncertainty because not every tiger can be photographed or directly observed. Results depend on the intensity of field sampling, camera placement, habitat accessibility and the quality of data collected by different states.
Population growth must also be interpreted alongside:
- habitat quality;
- genetic diversity;
- prey availability;
- connectivity between populations;
- carrying capacity;
- levels of human–wildlife conflict.
Future conservation priorities include strengthening ecological corridors, improving coordination among states, regulating infrastructure in tiger landscapes and involving local communities in conservation.
