Introduction
Bundelkhand Region is a semi-arid plateau region spread across southern Uttar Pradesh and northern Madhya Pradesh. It derives its name from the Bundela Rajput dynasty, which ruled the region during the medieval period. Characterised by undulating terrain, hard rock geology and erratic rainfall, Bundelkhand is one of India’s most drought-prone and water-stressed regions. The region has therefore become the focal area of several government initiatives on water conservation, irrigation and river interlinking, including the Ken–Betwa Link Project.
Geographical Extent
Bundelkhand comprises 13 districts, distributed as follows:

The region lies on the Bundelkhand Granite Massif, forming part of the Central Highlands of India.
Physiography
Bundelkhand is characterised by:

The rugged terrain limits groundwater recharge and makes irrigation difficult.
Drainage
The region is drained mainly by rivers belonging to the Yamuna basin, including:

- Ken
- Dhasan
- Paisuni (Mandakini)
- Sonar
- Jamni
- Bina
Although these rivers flow through the region, much of Bundelkhand experiences water scarcity because rainfall is highly seasonal and storage infrastructure remains inadequate.
Climate
Bundelkhand experiences a tropical semi-arid climate characterised by:
- Hot summers with temperatures often exceeding 45°C.
- Moderate to low annual rainfall.
- Rainfall concentrated during the southwest monsoon.
- High inter-annual rainfall variability.
- Frequent droughts and prolonged dry spells.
- High rates of evapotranspiration.
These climatic conditions make agriculture highly vulnerable to monsoon failure.
Agriculture
Agriculture is predominantly rain-fed, making farmers heavily dependent on the southwest monsoon.

Ken–Betwa Link Project
Bundelkhand is the primary beneficiary of the Ken–Betwa Link Project, India’s first river interlinking project.

- Expand irrigation in drought-prone areas.
- Improve drinking water supply.
- Reduce groundwater dependence.
