Introduction
The Ken River is one of the major rivers of the Yamuna River system and an important river of central India. Originating in the Kaimur Hills near Ahirgawan village in the Katni district of Madhya Pradesh, it flows through the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh before joining the Yamuna River near Chilla village in Banda district, Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the few major rivers in the country that still retains relatively good ecological health and supports rich aquatic and terrestrial biodiversity.
The river has gained national importance due to the Ken–Betwa Link Project, India’s first river interlinking project under the National Perspective Plan.
Course of the River
The Ken River originates in the Kaimur Range of the Vindhyan plateau and flows in a north-easterly direction through the districts of Katni, Damoh, Panna and Chhatarpur in Madhya Pradesh before entering Banda district in Uttar Pradesh, where it finally merges with the Yamuna.
The river traverses the drought-prone Bundelkhand region, making it an important source of water for agriculture, drinking water and ecosystems.

Physiography

The river is known for spectacular landscapes, including deep canyons and waterfalls, making it one of the most scenic river systems of central India.
Major Features
Raneh Falls
The Raneh Falls, located near Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, is one of the most famous attractions on the Ken River. The waterfall flows through a deep canyon formed by ancient granite and basalt formations, displaying rocks in multiple colours such as pink, red, grey and black. The area is often described as a natural geological museum due to its unique rock formations.
Ken Gharial Sanctuary
The Ken Gharial Sanctuary extends across parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Although gharials were reintroduced into the sanctuary from captive breeding programmes, the river continues to provide an important habitat for several aquatic species, including mugger crocodiles, turtles and numerous fish species.
Ecological Importance
The Ken River is regarded as one of the cleanest rivers in the Yamuna basin because of relatively low levels of industrialisation and urbanisation in its catchment.

Panna Tiger Reserve
A significant stretch of the Ken River flows through the Panna Tiger Reserve, where it serves as the primary source of water for wildlife throughout the year. The river supports one of India’s successful tiger reintroduction programmes and sustains diverse flora and fauna, including leopards, sloth bears, wolves, vultures and gharials.
The health of the Ken River is therefore closely linked to the ecological stability of the reserve.
Ken–Betwa Link Project
The Ken River forms the basis of the Ken–Betwa Link Project (KBLP), the first river-linking project being implemented under the National Perspective Plan (NPP).
The project proposes the construction of the Daudhan Dam on the Ken River and the transfer of water to the Betwa River basin through a link canal to address water scarcity in the Bundelkhand region.
While the project promises irrigation, drinking water supply and hydropower generation, it has also generated concerns regarding forest submergence, habitat fragmentation, ecological flows and impacts on the biodiversity of the Panna Tiger Reserve.
