GOBARdhan Scheme (Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan)

Introduction

The GOBARdhan Scheme is a flagship initiative of the Government of India that promotes the scientific management of biodegradable waste, particularly cattle dung and organic waste, to produce biogas, Compressed Biogas (CBG), bio-CNG and organic manure.

Launched in 2018 under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase II, the scheme aims to convert waste into wealth by supporting the establishment of biogas and bio-resource recovery plants. It promotes a circular economy, improves rural sanitation, enhances farmers’ incomes and contributes to clean energy generation.

India generates enormous quantities of biodegradable waste every year from:

Traditionally, much of this waste remains underutilized or is disposed of improperly, leading to:

GOBARdhan stands for:
