Introduction
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a clean-burning gaseous fuel produced by compressing natural gas, primarily composed of methane (CH₄), to about 200–250 bar. Compressing the gas significantly reduces its volume, making it suitable for storage and transportation.
CNG is widely used as an alternative to petrol and diesel in the transport, industrial and commercial sectors due to its lower emissions, high energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Composition
Natural gas mainly consists of:
- Methane (CH₄): 85–95%
- Ethane (C₂H₆)
- Propane (C₃H₈)
- Butane (C₄H₁₀)
- Small quantities of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulphide and water vapour.
Methane is the principal combustible component and provides the energy value of CNG.
Production of CNG
The production process involves:
- Extraction of natural gas from conventional or unconventional gas fields.
- Removal of impurities such as water vapour, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and other contaminants.
- Compression of purified natural gas to 200–250 bar using high-pressure compressors.
- Storage in specially designed high-pressure cylinders before distribution to consumers.

City Gas Distribution (CGD) Network

SATAT Initiative
The Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative, launched in 2018 by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, promotes the production and use of Compressed Biogas (CBG) as a sustainable substitute for CNG.
National Gas Grid
India is expanding its natural gas pipeline infrastructure through the National Gas Grid to improve the availability of natural gas across the country.
