UMANG stands for Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance. It is a digital governance platform of the Government of India that provides access to multiple government services through a single mobile application and web platform.
It was launched in 2017 by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and is developed by the National e-Governance Division (NeGD).
Basic Meaning
UMANG works as a single-window platform for government services.
Instead of downloading separate apps for different departments, citizens can use UMANG to access services related to central government, state governments, local bodies and public agencies.
It supports the idea of “governance on demand” under the Digital India programme.
Services Available
UMANG provides access to a wide range of public services.
Important services include:
- EPFO services
- PAN services
- Aadhaar-linked services
- DigiLocker
- National Scholarship Portal
- Passport Seva
- income tax services
- gas booking
- pension services
- Ayushman Bharat services
- farmer-related services
- transport-related services
- education services
- health services
- utility bill payments
- state government services
The platform is designed to bring multiple government departments onto one digital interface.
Key Features
UMANG is citizen-centric and mobile-first.
Important features include:
- single app for multiple government services
- available on Android, iOS and web
- supports multiple Indian languages
- Aadhaar-based and mobile-based authentication
- integration with DigiLocker
- access to central and state services
- service tracking facility
- chatbot and helpdesk support
- digital payments for selected services
Its multi-language support is important because digital governance cannot be truly inclusive if services are available only in English or Hindi.
Link with Digital India
UMANG is an important part of the Digital India programme.
Digital India aims to provide:
- digital infrastructure as a core utility
- governance and services on demand
- digital empowerment of citizens
UMANG directly supports the second goal by making government services available through one platform.
It reduces the need for physical visits to government offices and supports paperless, cashless and presence-less service delivery.
Role of NeGD
The National e-Governance Division (NeGD) under MeitY developed and manages UMANG.
NeGD supports the implementation of Digital India and several e-governance initiatives. UMANG is one of its major citizen-facing platforms.
Why UMANG Matters
UMANG is important because India has hundreds of government schemes and services across different ministries and states. Without integration, citizens may struggle to find the correct portal or app.
UMANG simplifies access by bringing services together.
Its importance lies in:
- improving ease of access to government services
- reducing dependence on physical offices
- improving transparency
- reducing paperwork
- supporting digital inclusion
- helping citizens track service requests
- promoting integrated e-governance
Examples of Use
A citizen can use UMANG to:
- check EPF balance
- download pension-related information
- access DigiLocker documents
- apply for scholarships
- access health scheme services
- book LPG refill
- use government certificates or documents
- check agriculture-related services
- pay certain utility bills
This makes UMANG useful for daily governance interactions.
Significance
UMANG is significant because it represents the shift from department-wise digital governance to platform-based governance.
Instead of citizens adjusting to fragmented government systems, services are brought together on one platform.
It is one of the key examples of India’s move towards integrated, mobile-first and citizen-centric digital governance.
